Family week, and what it actually is
Family week (sometimes called the family program) is the stretch when a spouse, partner, or another close family member comes into the treatment setting for a few days. Programs differ on length and format. The misunderstanding families bring with them is surprisingly common.
What it actually is
There is a heavy education component. Depending on the program, there is also real attention to the family member's own part in the pattern. That is not about blame. It is about the system the professional has been living inside.
Family members are often uncomfortable with therapy language the person in treatment has had weeks to get used to. That gap is normal. It is not proof that the family "doesn't get it."
The correction families most need
Family week is not a chance to spend a few days criticizing the professional. It is education and a learning opportunity. It is not the family's chance to tell the therapist how bad the professional "really" is.
That correction matters on both sides of the visit. Spouses who arrive ready to prosecute can leave without the education they came for. Professionals who brace for a roasting can miss the point of the week.
What to know a week before you go
- Ask the program for the schedule and who should attend.
- Expect education, group time, and structured conversation, not a private trial.
- Bring questions about aftercare, monitoring, and what home will look like in the first weeks after discharge. Those are fair game.
- Leave the full history to the clinical team's process; the week is short.
After family week
The person in treatment has been practicing new habits in a structured setting. Everyone else at home has not. Coming home is not "go back to the old life with a certificate." It is building a different week around at least some of the same people. For the longer stretch after treatment, see what monitoring looks like and how it ends.
